We are happy and feel good when we have a positive attitude. There are times in our life when we do not feel positive about ourselves, and consequently, about our life in general.
Bad days, we all have them. We get in a funk. We do not feel like doing anything, we are grouchy, and we are not pleasant to be around. Those are the days when we want to curl up somewhere and ignore the world.
Why is it that some days we can pop out of bed and feel like we can conquer the world. You wake up with a smile, jump out of bed, and cannot wait to get started.
Other days, not so much.
There are days when I wake up, and I realize it is a funky day. It usually happens when I have not slept well. I can feel the grouchies stirring in my body. It almost like I cannot wait to say something negative.
Then there will be those days when something doesn’t go right. You encounter a problem at work or, you disagree with a friend or co-worker.
So what do I do? What can you do? Maybe some of these suggestions can help you too.
The first thing to do is to recognize how you feel. Acknowledge it and tell yourself it is okay. You are grouchy; no big deal, you can get past it. Smile and poke some fun at yourself. Realize how you feel and that it is up to you to decide how to deal with it.
If you are responding to a bad situation or a disagreement, acknowledge what happened and accept that you were part of it and take responsibility for your action or reaction. Don’t play the blame game because that can cause additional problems. Learn from what happened so you can avoid a reoccurrence in the future.
I have a conversation with myself. I talk it out in my mind. I think it through, ask myself questions, until I get to a better place. I may not solve the problem, but I change my mindset enough to be able to cope with and get past it.
Change your surroundings. For me, it helps to go outside. Go for a walk, have coffee with a friend, walk your dog. Go for a ride, maybe go to a park or go to the library.
Talk to a friend. I talk to my dog and cat. It helps. I talk, they listen, they don’t talk back, and it lets me work through whatever it is that is bothering me. That is the true definition of a friend.
Change the channel. What I mean is change what you are doing at the moment to give yourself a different perspective. Listen to some music, read a book, watch a movie or exercise. Do something you enjoy, but you may not be able to as much as you would like. It allows you to relax and let your mind wander. You will feel refreshed and you may come away with a different, improved, attitude.
Spend time with positive people. Sounds easy, but we cannot always control who we spend our time with. There may be a co-worker, or even a relative, who we are required to interact with.
Start by scaling back the amount of time you spend with them. Don’t be rude, but if you see them in the break room, in the hall, or anywhere where you are not required to be, keep walking, do not stop. Avoid unnecessary conversations.
Do not get pulled into negative actions or conversations with anyone. If you do not have anything positive to add, don’t. Just remain quiet. There is something about human nature that makes it difficult to step back. We feel like we have to become involved. No, we do not.
Make a point to think, and talk, using positive language. One of the things I love and respect about my oldest son is his positive language. Ask him how he is and he will respond, “I’m Fantastic!” He is smiling and standing with a confident attitude. He exudes positivity.
How we respond to people can change our day and theirs. Be positive, even when you are feeling a little funky, it will make you feel better. Fake it till you make it.
Smile, even if you are all alone. Smile at everyone with whom you interact. The mail person, the store clerk, the barista who made your coffee. Thank them with sincerity. Ask them how they are and listen to what they say.
Limit the amount of time you spend online. We almost feel it is necessary to plugin, but do we really? There is so much negativity online and on the news. It can creep up on you, put you in a bad mood, bring you down. Unplug.
Pick what you listen to or what you read. There are many choices you can make online, which are beneficial. If it is negative, turn it off, but if it is positive, then stay tuned. The choice is up to you. Listen to educational podcasts such as Ted Talks. If there is a skill, you want to learn, or improve, visit YouTube, or take an online course.
Remember to be grateful. We can get so wound up in what is wrong, especially about things we can’t change, that we forget about what is positive in our life. We do not have control over many things that happen to us, but we can control our attitude and our response.
Choose to be positive. So much of what we do have, we do not appreciate. I wouldn’t say I like our house. It does have many issues that we should fix, but I realize that most of what is wrong, we will have to accept. I will make small changes as we can afford to, but I have a home. Many others do not.
We have food on our table; we have each other, and for the most part, when you stop and think about it, what else do we need. I am grateful for all the important things we do have.
One thing we can all do and should do is take care of ourselves. Rest, relax, spend time with the people you love. With me, most of my negativity can be fixed by taking a nap.
