Sometimes I will post about other aspects of my life such as things I like to do and what I may have done in the past. What are my interests ? I love to read although I do not read as much as I used to because I have macular degeneration and without a really good light it has become more difficult to read. One of the books I have read recently is “The 6th Extinction” written by Elizabeth Kolbert. If you are not a believer in climate change and the effects it has on us all, I highly recommend this book. It may change your mind.
I love to garden and right now I am longing for true Spring. It cannot come soon enough. I am so tired of the cold temperatures, snow and wind. I am outside multiple times a day to feed horses, walk the dog and cat and shovel snow. But it is not the same as being outside in the sun and warm temperatures. I love to play in the dirt of my gardens and move plants and spread mulch; it is a joyous experience to me. Love it. This year I hope to learn how to drive, and use, the BIG garden tractor. There is much to do in the pastures. There is fencing to fix and take down in the horse pastures and then mowing them as well. We have a garden of burdocks; not a good mix with horses and long haired cats.
In the fall & winter of 2018 I re-discovered Quilting. I actually consider that the first step in my pursuit of moving forward. I had to brush away a lot of cobwebs; it had been many years since the last time I had made a quilt. What makes it worse is I have never taken a lesson from a qualified instructor which I highly recommend doing. Actually understanding the process would be so much easier. I spent quite a bit of time reading and watching videos which helped but I think having an instructor right there to guide you would be the best way to do it. Something I still want to do.
I want to make things. I want to be more creative. Some would call it crafting and I guess that is what it is. I want to learn how to do Punch Needle. I want to make some fabric cuffs and necklaces. So many things such as mixed media, alcohol painting, hypertufa containers, barn quilts in different sizes. Maybe Etsy in the future ?
Also I want to, and need to, learn to do some basic home repairs. Simple things like replacing door weather stripping, replacing a door threshold, looking for drafts and finding ways to seal them such as spray insulation. How about fixing/replacing drywall and installing moulding and beadboard. We live in an older, poorly constructed house and it needs a lot of work.
For the last several years I did antiquing and was part of an Antique Mall so I did quite a bit of furniture refinishing, painting and repair. I truly loved it. I did stop doing that last year and I do miss it. Part of the enjoyment was going to auctions and household sales. The hunt for great antiques was really enjoyable. I decided to stop for multiple reasons. Consequently I do have a lot of “stuff” left that I will continue to refurbish and either incorporate into my home or sell. I see a barn sale in my future this summer; at least one. I also sell on Ebay; so that is a continual activity. Here is a link to one of my items. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=+++303067317992&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=eBay+item+number++303067317992&LH_TitleDesc=0
I like to be creative and so hopefully I will find the time to do that more in the future. There is a concept out there that we all slow down as we age and I do strongly believe that to be true. However, it does not need to be that way and more and more people are changing that concept. I want to be one of them. Here’s to “Moving Forward” and making strides to stay young in mind, body and spirit.
Follow me and join me, won’t you ?
